Acceptance and Commitment therapy

ACT is a modern, evidence based approach that supports people to live meaningful, fulfilling lives whilst making space for difficult thoughts, emotions, and experiences.  Rather than focussing on "getting rid of" uncomfortable feelings, ACT helps us change our relationship with them, so they have less power over how we live and what we value.

ACT is grounded in the understanding that distress is a natural part of being human.  In therapy, we work gently and collaboratively to build psychological flexibility-the ability to stay present, respond with self-compassion, and take steps towards what matters most, even when things feel hard.

A key part of ACT involves learning to notice thoughts as thoughts, rather than facts that must be obeyed.  This can reduce the impact of self-criticism, anxiety and shame, and create more choice in how you respond.  We also explore values; what gives your life meaning and direction, and support you to take values aligned actions at a pace that feels manageable.
